Additional Ways to Get Involved
Note: Residents Against Gaming Expansion does not endorse political candidates, parties, or platforms. The information provided below is intended to help you better understand the positions of our local public officials on casino gaming in East County.
We divide candidates into two camps: those whom we consider ”Friends of East County” and those we consider “Friends of Casino Interests”. This division shamelessly reflects our obvious bias in opposition to any further expansion of casino gaming in East County, from whatever source. We may be politically neutral, but we are not neutral on the issue of casino gaming in the midst of our homes and neighborhoods!
Dianne Jacob
County Supervisor from the 2nd District, which embraces much of East County, Dianne Jacob has been a staunch opponent of inappropriate casino gaming expansion in her district. She opposed the passage of Proposition 96, which gave Sycuan the right to add 3,000 slot machines to its existing casino, and to construct a 2nd casino on the Singing Hills Resort. She has challenged the construction of a casino off Route 94 by the Jamul Indian Village. Most recently, she has objected to an application by Sycuan for a liquor license at its casino in the Dehesa Valley.
Supervisor Jacob does not accept campaign funds from Indian tribes.
Duncan Hunter
Duncan Hunter is the incumbent Representative to the US Congress from the 52nd District, which includes most of East County. He is retiring from Congress at the end of his current term, which expires in January 2010.
Over the years, the office of Congressman Hunter has been very helpful on issues related to casinos. He opposed the expansion of the Sycuan casino, which was approved by the State Legislature and secured public approval as Proposition 96. He has opposed permitting tribes to take additional land into their federal trust for the purpose of casino gaming.
Representative Hunter has declared that he has not accepted campaign funds from Indian tribes.
Duncan D. Hunter
Duncan D. Hunter is a candidate for US Congress from the 52nd District. The current incumbent, Duncan Hunter Sr., is retiring from Congress at the end of his current term, which expires in January 2010.
Candidate Hunter has announced that he will not accept campaign funds from Indian tribes.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger is in his 2nd and final term as governor of the State of California.
In his last campaign, Gov. Schwarzenegger proclaimed that he would make the Indian tribes “pay their fair share” of casino revenues to the state. However, it has been reliably reported that several of the wealthiest tribes threatened to spend $20 million with his opponent during the campaign.
As a result, the governor negotiated with four tribes, including Sycuan, to vastly increase their gambling empires, and has promised to do so for many other tribes in the state. He ignored all our pleas to desist from this course of action, which is committing California to become a casino gambling state on part with Nevada.
Apparently, the governor cares little for the non-Indian citizens of East County.
"Jerry" Brown
Gerald Brown, former governor of the state of California, is the incumbent state Attorney General. As per the California Constitution, the AG is responsible for the adequate and uniform enforcement of the laws of the state of California. Furthermore, as per the website of the AG, “….the Attorney General establishes and operates projects and programs to protect Californians from fraudulent, unfair, and illegal activities…”
Recently, the California Gambling Control Commission attempted to implement statewide, uniform standards for Indian gaming. These standards are sorely needed, as billions of dollars annually pass through these unregulated casinos. Astonishingly, AG Brown elected to oppose these standards! Could a future run for governor figure in his thinking? The San Diego Union-Tribune’s excellent editorial on this matter can be found here
Joel Anderson
Assemblyman Joel Anderson represents the 77th Assembly District in Sacramento, which comprises virtually all of East County. He is a resident of Harbison Canyon.
Mr. Anderson has voted consistently in support of measures favoring Indian casinos. In 2007, he voted to approve the Sycuan amended compact, which gave Sycuan the right to add 3,000 slot machines to its existing casino, and build a new casino on the Singing Hills Resort Property. He ignored the entreaties of the community, including petitions containing 2,500 signatures opposing the casino expansion.
Assemblyman Anderson has not announced whether he accepts campaign funds from Indian tribes.
Dennis Hollingsworth
Dennis Hollingsworth in the incumbent State Senator from the 36th District. which includes virtually all of San Diego County east of Route 15, and extends northward into Riverside County. His current 4-year term expires in 2010.
Senator Hollingsowrth has voted consistently in support of measures favoring Indian casinos. In 2007, he voted to approve the Sycuan amended compact, which gave Sycuan the right to add 3,000 slot machines to its existing casino, and build a new casino on the Singing Hills Resort Property.
Senator Hollingsworth’s campaign has accepted considerable funds from Indian tribes in the past, including $12,000 in the 2005-2006 election cycle.
