Additional Ways to Get Involved
How did we get here? How did Indian tribes get the unique right to operate gambling casinos on their reservations, a right no other California citizen enjoys? Why did Governor Schwarzenegger approve a compact with the wealthy Sycuan band which would allow them to build a new casino at Singing Hills Resort, and which would enrich the tribe by a further hundreds of millions of dollars each year? Why did San Diego Assemblymen and Senators support this awful compact? And what can we, the endangered citizenry, do about it?

INDIAN CASINOS IN CALIFORNIA – A HISTORY
This link takes you to a clear, concise history of the development of the Indian Casino Industry in California, from the critical 1987 US Supreme Court Decision, through Propositions 5, 1A, and the recent Schwarzenegger compacts with the Indian tribes, including Sycuan. This article is excerpted from a lengthy but excellent study, “Gambling in the Golden State 1998 Forward”, published in 2006 by the California Research Bureau, at the request of the Attorney General. The full text of the study is available by clicking here.
