WELCOME TO OUR WEBSITE!

Featured ImageWe (R.A.G.E., or Residents Against Gaming Expansion) are a coalition of hundreds of local residents objecting to the expansion of Indian casino gaming activities in East County, particularly the Dehesa Valley. A primary focus of our activities is the prevention of further intrusive activities by the Sycuan band of the Kumeyaay nation, which already operates one casino in the Dehesa Valley. We work closely with the Dehesa Valley Community Council (DVCC) and Jamulians Against the Casino (JAC).

WE OPPOSE THE SYCUAN LAND-INTO TRUST APPLICATION!

Featured ImageIn early 2009, the Sycuan band filed an application with the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs to add 2,000 precious acres of land in the Dehesa Valley to their existing reservation. This land, which the tribe owns, includes the Singing Hills Resort, Sloan Canyon, and adjacent properties. If they are successful, that land officially becomes “Indian country”, and will be removed from county tax rolls, as well as being exempted from local community land use controls. It also means that, at the whim of the tribe, miles of hiking and biking trails could be shut off from public use forever.

Although the Sycuan band claims not to have plans to use any of this land for a future casino and high-rise hotel, the fact remains that as a sovereign nation, it has the right to change its mind. Once this land is taken into their federal land trust, it will be next to impossible to oppose the construction of a casino at Singing Hills Resort should the tribe elect to erect one there in the future. That would destroy the west end of the Valley, as well as the communities on the surrounding bluffs.

WE OPPOSE THE SYCUAN LIQUOR LICENSE APPLICATION!

Featured ImageIn 2008 the Sycuan band applied to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) for a liquor license at its casino in the Dehesa Valley. This would be a disaster for local residents, who already must contend with aggressive, impatient traffic from casino patrons on Willow Glen and Dehesa Roads. Imagine the slaughter which would occur on those roads if liquor was authorized at the casino!

In June of 2009, despite written protests from almost 400 (!) local residents, the ABC approved an interim liquor permit for the casino. The casino may begin serving liquor to its patrons as early as July 2009. The final permit will be subject to a public hearing on the matter, which has not yet been scheduled. Only those who have already filed objections to the application may speak at the hearing.

Get educated: read our Background section explaining what the Sycuan band is attempting to do, and our reasons for opposing it. Follow links to sister organizations which are also combating expanded Indian gaming.
